Checkmk Raw is the open-source edition of Checkmk — descended from Nagios but heavily modernized. Auto-discovery of services, ~2,000 bundled check plugins, and a web UI that feels engineered rather than bolted-on. Backed by a Python/C++ codebase actively maintained by Checkmk GmbH.
Pick it if: you want batteries-included server, network, and application monitoring with minimal config — Checkmk’s discovery and bundled checks beat Prometheus exporters on time-to-first-dashboard. Strong choice for IT teams managing mixed Windows/Linux fleets.
Skip it if: you want cloud-native, GitOps-managed observability — Checkmk’s WATO config interface is point-and-click rather than declarative. The “Enterprise” and “Cloud” editions are proprietary; if you outgrow Raw you’ll be talking to sales.
Deployment: RPM/DEB site packages, official Docker image, or Helm chart for k8s monitoring. Single-site deployment scales to thousands of hosts; distributed monitoring for larger estates.
